Re-roof permit checklist — Tampa, Florida

Assembled from Tampa’s own published permit rules. Every line below is quoted from a city document and linked to it. Nothing here is generated, estimated, or inferred from another jurisdiction.

Do you need a permit?

Tampa requires a permit for a re-roof.

When a permit is not required

Tampa Code Section 5-105.2 exempts the installation of a new roof covering, or the recovering, re-roofing, or repairing of an existing roof covering, of 500 square feet or less. Separate from the 500 square foot local threshold, Fla. Stat. 553.79(1)(g) has since July 1, 2026 required every Florida local government to exempt single-family residential work under $7,500 on written request supported by the contract or equivalent documentation. Structural work is outside that exemption and flood hazard area properties are outside it too, but the statute does not place roofing on either side of the structural line and Tampa has published no interpretation. Where the local 500 square foot exemption already covers the job, the state exemption adds nothing.
