Tampa requires a permit for a retaining wall.
Chapter 2026-63, Laws of Florida added Fla. Stat. 553.79(1)(i) effective July 1, 2026, and it bars Tampa from requiring a permit per lot where a retaining wall runs across multiple lots at single-family, two-family or townhouse properties; one permit must cover the project as a whole. The related $7,500 exemption at Fla. Stat. 553.79(1)(g) is available for single-family residential work only on written request with documentation, and it does not reach structural work or property within a Florida Building Code flood hazard area. Because the statute does not say whether a retaining wall is structural and Tampa has not published a reading, the Privacy/Retaining Wall permit described below should be treated as still required pending confirmation.
