General building work permit checklist — Austin, Texas

Assembled from Austin’s own published permit rules. Every line below is quoted from a city document and linked to it. Nothing here is generated, estimated, or inferred from another jurisdiction.

Do you need a permit?

Austin requires a permit for general building work.

When a permit is not required

The City's Work Exempt from Building Permits page lists work that does not require a building permit. The residential exemptions on that page apply to one- and two-family dwellings and townhouses not more than three stories, and work exempt from a permit must still comply with applicable Building Codes, City Codes, and all other applicable ordinances.

Listed because the city publishes a separate rule for each type — not because this project necessarily triggers one. Whether it does depends on your scope of work.
