Santa Clarita requires a permit for a deck.
Santa Clarita Building Code Section 105.2 exempts decks or platforms accessory to a Group R-3 or U occupancy that are not more than 30 inches above adjacent grade, provided they are not constructed over a slope or in a flood hazard area or floodplain. Related hardscape such as patios, seating walls, walkways, stepped walks and raised planters accessory to a house is also exempt. Anything higher than 30 inches, or on a slope or in a floodplain, needs a permit.
