Fence permit checklist — Santa Clarita, California

Assembled from Santa Clarita’s own published permit rules. Every line below is quoted from a city document and linked to it. Nothing here is generated, estimated, or inferred from another jurisdiction.

Do you need a permit?

Santa Clarita does not require a permit for a fence.

When a permit is not required

Santa Clarita Building Code Section 105.2 exempts, where allowed by the City's Planning Division: chain link or wire fences not over 12 feet in height; wood, vinyl or open wrought iron fences not over 6 feet in height; and block walls or pilasters not over 42 inches in height. The exemption does not apply if the fence or wall is constructed within a flood hazard area or floodplain, or if it serves as part of a swimming pool barrier. Note that Santa Clarita's 6-foot threshold for wood and vinyl fences is one foot lower than the 7-foot exemption in the model code, and masonry walls lose the exemption at only 42 inches.
