Do you need a permit?
Santa Clarita requires a permit for a retaining wall.
Santa Clarita Building Code Section 105.2 exempts retaining walls not over 4 feet in height measured from the bottom of the footing to the top of the wall, or, where the wall supports a slope or surcharge, not more than 30 inches measured the same way. For dry-stacked interlocking systems such as keystone walls the exempt height drops to 36 inches above lowest adjacent grade, or 18 inches where supporting a slope or surcharge. The exemption does not apply at all to walls built on a slope steeper than 3:1, walls in a floodplain, or walls impounding Class I, II or IIIA liquids.
