Do you need a permit?
Santa Clarita does not require a permit for a shed.
Santa Clarita Building Code Section 105.2 exempts one-story detached light-framed structures accessory to a Group R-3 or U occupancy used as tool and storage sheds, playhouses, trellises, gazebos, arbors and greenhouses where gross floor area does not exceed 120 square feet measured to the outside walls or support posts, provided all of the following hold: the floor is not more than 30 inches above adjoining grade, overall height is not more than 14 feet from adjacent grade, the structure is not on a slope steeper than 3:1, it is not in a flood hazard area or floodplain, it has no permanent heating or air conditioning, and the Planning Division approves the location. Sheds over 120 but not exceeding 250 square feet that meet those same conditions may be built under a 'foundation only' permit, which may include one 20-amp branch circuit, one light fixture and one 110/115V GFCI outlet. Exempt structures may still be regulated by the California Wildland-Urban Interface Code.
