Items include detached one-story accessory buildings of 200 square feet or less serving a single family dwelling, such as tool sheds and playhouses; fences up to six feet high; retaining walls up to two feet high measured from the top of the footing, where no surcharge is supported and no flammable liquids are impounded; oil derricks; movable cases, counters and partitions up to five feet nine inches; water tanks set directly on grade up to 5,000 gallons within a two-to-one height-to-width ratio; platforms, walks and driveways up to 30 inches above grade that sit over no basement or story and serve no accessible route; finish work such as paint, wallpaper, paneling, floor coverings, cabinets, moldings and countertops; temporary stage sets and scenery; window awnings on Group R, Division 3 and Group U occupancies projecting up to 54 inches; water features up to 18 inches deep at a single-family residence; storable swimming or wading pools accessory to a single-family dwelling with walls entirely above grade; storage racks eight feet or less; portable spas with integral heating and circulating equipment; and minor lath repair up to 30 square feet where no framing is replaced and the area is not a fire-resistance-rated assembly. These exemptions waive the building permit only; separate plumbing, electrical and mechanical permits still apply to the exempted items unless otherwise exempted.
