Do you need a permit?
Garland requires a permit for a shed.
Garland's exemption threshold is unusually low: a building permit is required for any accessory building larger than 20 square feet, which is far stricter than the 200-square-foot exemption in IRC R105.2 that many Texas cities follow. Accessory buildings include storage sheds, detached garages, gazebos, detached patio structures and cabanas. Sheds cannot be used as living space and must be built of conventional materials; unpainted wood, tin, plastic and plain concrete block are not accepted. Deed and HOA restrictions may be stricter and are not enforced by the city.
