Deck permit checklist — Tarrant County, Texas

Assembled from Tarrant County’s own published permit rules. Every line below is quoted from a city document and linked to it. Nothing here is generated, estimated, or inferred from another jurisdiction.

Do you need a permit?

Tarrant County does not require a permit for a deck.

When a permit is not required

No county permit attaches to building a deck at a home in unincorporated Tarrant County. The county issues no residential building permits or certificates of occupancy and enforces no zoning, and its published list of required approvals for unincorporated development - Fire Code construction permit (commercial/public/multifamily only), floodplain permit, OSSF permit, stormwater notification and county-road driveway/encroachment permits - includes nothing covering a residential deck. The one county trigger is location: any work within a FEMA-designated floodplain requires a county Floodplain Permit. An addition that increases a house's square footage or value by more than 50 percent falls under the ch. 233 subch. F builder notice and third-party inspection scheme. Inside city limits or, in some cases, a city's ETJ, the city's own deck permitting applies instead.
