Effective with the December 2018 Letting 114 2019 Standard Spec ifications Section 214 Obliterating Old Road
214.1 Description
1.This section describes grading portions of the old road requir ed to be abandoned, and includes scarifying or plowing areas of the old roadway. The work under this section applies only to those portions of the old roadway, des ignated for obliteration, located outside the slope limits of the grading for the new roadway.
214.2 (Vacant)
214.3 Construction
1.Grade and trim areas of the old roadway contiguous to and lyin g partly within the lateral grading limits of the new construction as require d, to obliterate the old road way.
2.Clear and grub areas outside the clearing and grubbing limits of the new project, necessary to properly obliterate the old road. Remove and dispose of or salvage misce llaneous structures from within the limits designated for obliterat ion. Topsoil, fertilize, and seed the area within the limits designated for obliteration.
3.After the road is no longer need ed for traffic, fill the old d itches and grade the roadway, either to approximately restore the origin al contour of the ground or to produce a contour that merges with the contour of the adjoining land. If possible, place waste materia l from the new construction in cuts on the old road. If the engineer allows, i n writing, the contractor ma y obtain borrow or sel ect borrow required for the new construction from fills on the old road.
4.Break-down and bury, or remove old bridges and culverts to be removed, for which no separate provision for disposal is included in the contract, as specifie d for their removal under 203, except, leave no parts of the structures within 2 feet of the finished surface.
5.Break pavements, curb, gutter, and similar rigid structures, t hat have no separate provision for disposal in the contract, and that occur within 2 feet of the p roposed finished surface into pieces no larger than one square foot befor e covering. Break down and rem ove pavements, curb, gutter, and similar rigid structures if occ urring within one foot of the pr oposed finished surface as specified for removing or abandoning miscellaneous structures under 204.
6.Scarify or plow old road aggreg ate or asphaltic surfacing unde rlying the proposed finished surface by less than one foot, that have no separate contract provision fo r salvage or disposal, , to effectively mix the material with soil. If possibl e, blade the surfacing materi al into the old ditches and cover with suitable soil.
7.Remove rocks, boulders, and su rface stone encountered in the w ork and dispose of as specified for roadway and drainage excavation under 205. Place stones larger than 6 inches at least 6 inches below the proposed finished sur face. If the obliterated area is suitable for cultivation keep stone to a reasonable minimum in the upper 18 inches of completed embankme nt and place no structure or pavement concrete or other debri s within 2 feet of the finished grade.
8.After completing rough grading, place topsoil as specified in 625 in the areas of the obliterated old road the plans designate, the co ntract specifies, or the engine er directs. After completing necessary topsoiling, harrow, smooth, fe rtilize, and seed the entire area of the obliterated old roadway as specified for fertilizer and seeding in 629 and 630, unless the engineer approves otherwise.
9.Remove material from culverts or bridges and other material, designated for salvage, to avoid damage, and place in neat piles on the right-of-way at locations the engineer designates.
214.4 Measurement
1.The department will measure Oblit erating Old Road, by the stat ion acceptably completed, measured to the nearest 1/10 station along t he old road centerline or refer ence line of those portions of the old roadway, designated for obliterat ion, located outside the slope limits of the grading for the new roadway. The department will excl ude areas of the old road from which the contractor has obtained material under the Borrow or Select Borrow bid items. 214.5 Payment
1.The department will pay for the measured quantity at the contr act unit price under the following bid item: ITEM NUMBER DESCRIPTION UNIT 214.0100 Obliterating Old Road STA
2.Payment for Obliterating Old Ro ad is full compensation for gra ding, scarifying, and plowing; for removing non-rigid pavement surfa cing; and for the other work r equired under this section except as follows: Effective with the December 2018 Letting 115 2019 Standard Spec ifications 1. The department will pay separ ately for clearing and grubbin g under the Clearing and Grubbing bid items as specified in 201.5 . 2. The department will pay separately for grading and trimming areas of the old roadway contiguous to and lying partly within the lateral grading limits of the new const ruction under the Exca vation bid items as specified in 205.5 . 3. The department will pay separately for borrow or select bor row required for the construction of the new roadway, if obtained from the ol d road, under the Borrow or Select Borrow bid items as specified in 208.5 . 4. The department will pay for asphaltic surfacing, gravel, cr ushed stone or other mat erials salvaged from the old road and used in the constr uction of the new road, as calle d for on the plans or ordered, separately. 5. If the contract contains the Re moving Pavement bid item, th e department will pay separately for removing concrete pavement, brick pavemen t, and rigid base, from within the limits designated for obliteration, under the Removing Pavement bid item as specified in 204.5 . 6. If the contract includes separ ate bid items for removing sp ecific miscellaneous structures from within the limits designated for obliteration, the depar tment will pay sep arately for these removals under the 204 bid items specified under 204.5 . 7. The department will pay separately for removing old culverts and bridges under the 203 bid items specified in 203.5 . 8. The department will pay for separately for topsoiling under the Topsoil or Salvaged Topsoil bid items as specified in 625.5 . 9. The department will pay separately for fertilizing under th e Fertilizer bid items as specified in 629.5 . 10. The department will pay separ ately for seeding under the S eeding bid items as specified in 630.5 . 301.1 Description
1.This section describes requirements common to sections 305 through 313 and 350. Exceptions and additional requirements are specified in those sections.
301.2 Materials
301.2.1 General
1.Provide coarse aggregates from a department-approved source as specified under 106.3.4.2 .
301.2.2 Definitions
1.Interpret these terms, used throughout part 3, as follows: Aggregate A composite mixture o f hard, durable mineral materials that ha ve been mechanically processed. Breaker run Aggregate resulting from the mechanical crushing of quarried s tone or concrete not screened or proce ssed after primary crushing. Crushed gravel Crushed angular particles of gravel retained on a No. 10 sieve. Crushed stone Crushed angular particles of quarried rock retained on a No. 1 0 sieve. Fractured face An angular, rough, or broken parti cle surface with sharp edges . Gravel Naturally occurring rounded part icles of rock that will be ret ained on a No. 10 sieve. Pit run Unprocessed aggregate, with pred ominately 1 1/2- inch or larger sized particles, obtained from a gravel pit. Natural material Material that is excavated, mined, quarried, or originates fro m a pit or quarry; reclaimed asphalt or crushed concrete are not natura l materials within part 3. 2.Contact the engineer to collect s ample aggregates proposed for the project. The engineer and contractor will jointly obtain the sample. The sampler must be HTCP certified to sample aggregates. Do not place base until the engi neer tests and approves the mat erial, except as allowed in 106.1 .
