FENCE SECTION 1061 715 SECTION 1061 — FENCE

1061.1Markings.

A.Provide fence fabric carrying a tag showing:
1.Base metal type (steel or aluminum alloy number),
2.Coating type and class,
3.Wire diameter,
4.Length of fencing in the roll, and
5.Name or mark of the manufacturer.
B.Identify posts, wire, and other fittings by:
1.Manufacturer,
2.Base material type (steel or aluminum alloy number),
3.Class or coating, and
4.Pertinent data for proper identification and verification of conformance to the requirements

herein.

1061.2Inspection.

A.Each product or item provided remains subject to inspection at the factory and the fabricating

plant, in laboratories of the Department′s choosing, and at all other points of delivery.

1061.3Chain Link Fence.

A.Chain -link fabric made of galvanized steel fabric fence, #9 -gage unless specified otherwise. Type 1

class D coated, knuckled top and bottom or twist top/knuckle bottom conforming to the appropriate requirements of AASHTO M181.

B.Terminal, corner, and gate posts – AASHTO M181, Type I or Type II, Grade 1 or 2. Provide

consistent coating type within a single fence installation.

C.Line posts – AASHTO M181, Type I or Type II, Grade 1 or 2. Provide consistent coating type within

a single fence installation.

D.Top rail – AASHTO M181, Type I or Type II, Grade 1 or 2. Provide consistent coating type within a

single fence installation.

E.Outriggers – AASHTO M181.
F.Barbed wire – Use galvanized steel for barbed wire conforming to the requirements of AASHTO

M280 and consisting of two -strand #12 1/2 -gage wire with tightly wrapped, sharp, four -point barbs formed of #14 -gage wire spaced evenly at 5 -inch intervals or less. Use AASHTO M280 Type Z, Class 3 for galvanizing.

G.Tension wire – AASHTO M181, Type 1, Class 1.
H.Brace band for tension wire – AASHTO M181.
I.Stretcher bar – AASHTO M181.

FENCE SECTION 1061 716 J. Stretcher bar bands – AASHTO M181.

K.#6-gauge fabric ties – AASHTO M181, Type 1 class D coated.
L.#9-gauge fabric ties – AASHTO M181, Type 1 class D coated.
M.Hog ring fasteners – AASHTO M181, Type 1 class D coated.
N.Truss rod assembly – AASHTO M181.
O.Galvanized steel anchor blades – AASHTO M270, Grade 36, galvanized in accordance with AASHTO

M111.

P.Galvanized carriage bolts and elastic stop nuts – AASHTO M181.
Q.Anchor shoes – AASHTO M181.
R.Ground rod:
1.Underwriters Laboratories Listed and Approved.
2.5/8-inch Nominal Diameter.
3.8 feet long, Minimum.
4.Copper -bonded Steel.
S.Ground rod clamp:
1.Underwriters Laboratories UL467 Approved.
2.No. 6 solid copper conductor.
T.Vinyl coating:
1.When required by the contract, vinyl coat all chain link fence materials in accordance with

AASHTO M181 Type IV Class A.

1061.4Right -of-Way Fence.

A.Tubular end post – AASHTO M181, Type I or Type II, Grade 1 or 2 . Provide consistent coating type

within a single fence installation.

B.Tubular terminal post – AASHTO M181, Type I or Type II, Grade 1 or 2 . Provide consistent coating

type within a single fence installation.

C.Woven wire fencing – Provide woven wire fencing or woven wire fabric made of #9 -gage

galvanized wire conforming to the requirements of AASHTO M279, Grade 60, Type Z, Class 3 coating.

D.One strand barbed wire – Use galvanized steel for barbed wire conforming to the requirements of

AASHTO M280 and consisting of two -strand #12 1/2 -gage wire with tightly wrapped, sharp, four - point barbs formed of #14 -gage wire spaced evenly at 5 -inch interva ls or less. Use AASHTO M280, Type Z, Class 3 for galvanizing.

E.Diagonal brace – AASHTO M181, Type I or Type II, Grade 1 or 2 . Provide consistent coating type

within a single fence installation. FENCE SECTION 1061 717 F. Line post with anchor plate – In accordance with AASHTO M281 that are either galvanized in accordance with AASHTO M111, painted with resistant paint that is specifically designed for steel, or painted with shop or factory -based enamel.

G.Terminal and end post clamps or #9 -gage wire ties – AASHTO M181.
H.Line post clamps or wire ties – AASHTO M281.
I.Terminal and end post caps – AASHTO M181.
J.Ground rod:
1.Underwriters Laboratories Listed and Approved.
2.5/8-inch Nominal Diameter.
3.8 feet long, Minimum.
4.Copper -bonded Steel.
K.Ground rod clamp:
1.Underwriters Laboratories UL467 Approved.
2.No. 6 solid copper conductor.

1061.5Wood Post and Rail Fence.

A.Rails - Grade 1 lumber in accordance with AASHTO M168. Treat lumber in accordance with Section

1041.4 .A.4 with waterborne preservative.

B.Posts - Grade 1 lumber in accordance with AASHTO M168. Treat lumber in accordance with
C.Hardware - conforming to Section 1041.5.D.

1061.6Vinyl Post and Rail Fence.

A.Posts:
1.Made of high impact, ultraviolet (UV) resistant, rigid poly vinyl chloride (PVC), complying with

ASTM D1784, Class 14244 -B, Table 1.

2.Use posts with a minimum wall thickness of 0.135 inches and a minimum corner radius of 3/8

inches.

B.Rails:
1.Made of high impact, ultraviolet (UV) resistant, rigid poly vinyl chloride (PVC), complying with

ASTM D1784, Class 14244 -B, Table 1.

2.Use rails with a wall thickness of 0.90 inches and a minimum corner radius of 11/32 inches.
C.Post caps:
1.Made of high impact, ultraviolet (UV) resistant, rigid poly vinyl chloride (PVC), complying with

ASTM D1784, Class 14244 -B, Table 1.

2.Provide 1 piece molded caps with a minimum thickness of 0.095 inches that match the pole

cross section.
