3818.1SCOPE

Provide grounding rod and plate electrodes to establish direct contact with the earth for the grounding electrode system, supplemental grounding, and auxiliary grounding on lighting systems, traffic signal systems, other electrical systems, and metal bridge railing.

3818.2REQUIREMENTS

A Ground Rod Electrodes Provide ground rod electrodes meeting the following:

(1)Listed and labeled by an NRTL in accordance with UL 467, “Grounding and Bonding

Equipment”

(2)Meeting the requirements of ANSI/NEMA GR-1, “Grounding Rod Electrodes and

Grounding Rod Electrode Couplings”

(3)Diameter of 5/8 inches

(4)15 feet long unless otherwise specified elsewhere in the Contract

(5)ASTM A1018, Standard Specification for Steel, Sheet and Strip, Heavy-Thickness Coils,

Hot-Rolled, Carbon, Commercial, Drawing, Structural, High-Strength Low-Alloy, High- Strength Low-Alloy with Improved Formability, and Ultra-High Strength, cold drawn steel

(6)Minimum tensile strength of 80,000 psi

(7)Copper bonded (copper clad) outer coating

(8)Pointed

(9)Non-threaded

B Plate Electrodes Provide plate electrodes meeting the following:

(1)Listed and labeled by an NRTL in accordance with UL 96, “ANSI/CAN/UL Standard for

Lightning Protection Components”

(2)Meeting the requirements of NEC and NESC

(3)100 percent copper

(4)Minimum plate dimensions of 12 inches by 24 inches

(5)Minimum thickness of 0.06 inches

(6)Solid bare 6 AWG CU by 10 foot pigtail connected to the plate with an exothermic weld

connection
