696TEMPORARY IMPACT ATTENUATING DEVICES

696.1DESCRIPTION—This work is the furnishing, placing, and removing of temporary impact attenuating

devices for maintenance and protection of traffic during construction, as indicated.

696.2MATERIAL—

• Temporary impact attenuating device as listed in Bulletin 15 that is crashworthy according to the 2016 AASHTO Manual for Assessing Safety Hardware ( MASH) with either an FHWA eligibility letter or determination by an accredited testing laboratory stating that the product has passed all critical tests. Temporary impact attenuating devices manufactured on or before December 31, 2019, and successfully tested to NCHRP 350 or the 2009 edition of MASH, may continue to be used throughout their normal service lives.

• Reflective sheeting from a manufacturer listed in Bulletin 15 , as shown on the Standard Drawings , and as specified in Section 1103.05.

• Flat sheet signs from a manufacturer listed in Bulletin 15, as shown on the Standard Drawings, and as specified in Section 1103.04(a).

696.3CONSTRUCTION—

indicated. Apply reflective sheeting onto the space provided on the manufacturer’s impact head for delineation. Apply reflective sheeting onto flat sheet signs for a left clearance marker (OM-3L) and/or right clearance marker (OM-3R) to delineate a sand barrel array system. Attach the left clearance marker (OM -3L) and/or right clearance marker (OM -3R) securely to the front of the sand barrel array system , according to the manufacturer's recommendations, where traffic is required to pass to the left and/or right. If the pavement is cracked or damaged by installation or removal procedures, submit a repair procedure using approved materials for review. Do not begin repairs until the submittal is accepted. Upon removal of the attenuating device, remove all anchors, repair all anchor holes, and repair damage to the pavement in a manner approved by the Representative utilizing approved materials at no additional cost to the Department.

696.4MEASUREMENT AND PAYMENT—

Reflective sheeting as specified in Section 1103.05 is incidental. Flat sheet signs as specified in Section

1103.04(a) are incidental

paid as specified in Section 110.03(d) if money has not been secured through other sources for the same purpose.
