EPOXY PAVEMENT MARKINGS SECTION 861

547 SECTION 861 – EPOXY PAVEMENT MARKINGS

861.1Description.

This work consists of providing and installing epoxy pavement markings.

861.2Materials.

A.Epoxy paint Section 1071.2.1

E.Black aggregate Section 1071.2.5

861.3Construction.

861.3.1 Submittals.

A.Submit a schedule of operations for the engineer’s approval before starting any pavement

marking work. Submit the schedule 2 -weeks before the striping application. 861.3.2 Equipment.

A.Provide the engineer access to the application equipment for inspection. Do not commence work

until equipment is approved by the engineer.

B.Keep certificate of analysis for pavement marking paint being applied by the equipment within the

vehicle cabin. Provide the certificate of analysis to the engineer upon request.

C.Provide vehicle mounted longitudinal line application equipment with the following

characteristics:

1.Capable of applying approved two -component epoxy pavement marking material in a manner

that conforms to the manufacturer’s requirements and the requirements of the contract.

2.Equipped with material reservoirs, or space, for storage of epoxy resin composition parts A and

B, water, and reflective glass spheres. The equipment must be capable of holding 300 -gallons of each color paint and 1800 -lbs of glass beads.

3.Capable of simultaneously applying centerline and edgeline markings at the width indicated in

solid or broken patterns or various combinations thereof.

4.Equipped with automatic electrically controlled skip line mechanism capable of retracing the

existing markings or applying new markings.

5.Equipped with a bead dispenser capable of mechanically conveying glass beads onto the painted

surface, at the required application rate, by pressurization or other method not dependent upon gravity.

6.Equipped with at least one steerable gun carriage on the driver’s side and at least one on the

548 7. Equipped with a footage counter which automatically and continuously measures the length of each line placed, to the nearest foot. Provide proof of calibration to the engineer upon request.

8.Equipped with usage counter, which quantifies the volume of material placed. Provide proof of

calibration to the engineer upon request.

9.Equipped with a hand applicator for use in applying special markings.
10.Equipped with heating mechanism capable of heating part A and part B material to satisfy the

manufacturer’s recommendations and heating water to a temperature of approximately 140 degrees F.

11.Equipped with temperature gauges that have been calibrated within the past six months.

Provide proof of calibration to the engineer upon request.

12.Equipped with a transfer pump system on machine capable of transferring the paint from the

shipping containers at a rate of 25 gallons per minute.

13.Equipped with a citizens band transceiver for communication or other approved communication

device.

14.Equipped with pressure gauges on each proportioning pump located in an easily visible location.
15.Mobile and maneuverable enough to produce straight lines and standard curves in true arcs.
16.Equipped with DE MUTCD compliant signage.
D.Clean all parts of the equipment of foreign or different colored material prior to introducing a new

material batch. 861.3.3 Pavement marking layout.

A.Perform pavement marking layout as needed to ensure accurate placement.
B.Offset longitudinal lines at least 2 -inches from longitudinal pavement joints or seams.
C.Offset longitudinal lines at least 2 -inches to the inside of shoulder breaks of pavement.

861.3.4 Application.

A.Clean pavement surface of oil, surface treatment, curing compound, dirt, grease, concrete

laitance, and other contaminants to a width at least 4 -inches wider than the marking to be applied.

B.Ensure ambient and surface temperatures are at least 35 degrees F and rising, and in accordance

with the manufacturer's recommendations. If the manufacturer recommended temperature requirement for the pavement marking material application deviates from these specifications, the manufacturer's recommendations shall hol d priority. Confirm the atmospheric and pavement surface conditions with the engineer prior to starting work.

C.Place a quality control strip as directed by the engineer at the beginning of each day’s operations

to demonstrate that the application equipment is working properly and applying markings as required. Repeat the demonstration whenever there is a change in equipment settings or as directed by the engineer when the quality of the line being applied is in question. Authorization to proceed will be given by the engineer when the quality control test indicates conformance. 549 D. Apply contrast pavement markings consisting of black epoxy flooded with black aggregate in accordance with the contract and the manufacturer’s recommendations. Dispense black epoxy at a wet film thickness of 20 -mils.

E.Apply white or yellow pavement marking material in accordance with the contract and the

manufacturer’s recommendations. Apply in accordance with the following provisions unless approved otherwise by the engineer.

1.Apply pavement markings in the general direction of traffic.
2.Apply at an application speed of no more than 10 miles per hour .
3.Dispense epoxy paint at a wet film thickness of 20 -mils. Apply glass beads uniformly over the

surface using the double drop method with a minimum rate of 12 -pounds of Type 1 glass beads and 12 -pounds of Type 4 glass beads for a total minimum weight of 24 -pounds per gallon of paint applied.

4.All necessary markings shall be installed before the end of the workday. Install the markings as

soon as possible after weather interrupts the work.

F.Protect the pavement markings for an adequate time to allow the markings to dry and become

track -free using a method approved by the engineer. Follow the manufacturer’s recommendations for track -free time.

G.Remove existing pavement markings that conflict with new or altered traffic patterns as well as

any layout markings installed that detract from the overall appearance or function of pavement markings in accordance with Section 868.

H.Request engineer to perform retroreflectivity testing once pavement marking at the location is

complete. 861.3.5 Evaluation and Correction.

A.The engineer will evaluate the pavement markings for defects after an observation period of 180 -

days from the date the pavement is opened to traffic. Time charges will not be assessed during the observation period provided all other work is complete. The engineer may waive a portion or all of the 180 -day observation period.

B.The engineer will inform the contractor of pavement markings that have failed and that require

corrective action.

C.Correct pavement marking defects as directed by the engineer within 30 -days of receiving written

notification. Examples of pavement marking defects for epoxy pavement marking material include:

1.Insufficient retroreflectivty, glass bead coverage or bead retention.
2.Damage caused by a vehicle tracking over uncured pavement marking material.
3.More than 5 percent exposure of substrate or poor adhesion in any 2000 -foot section of

longitudinal marking.

4.Discolored marking when compared visually with color chips.
5.Longitudinal marking is more than 2 -inches out of place.
6.Insufficient pavement marking thickness.

550 7. Pavement marking variations more than 3/8 -inch from alignment within any 40 -foot section of traveled way.

861.4Method of Measurement.

A.The Department will measure linear pavement markings as the number of linear feet of pavement

markings placed and accepted.

861.5Basis of Payment.

A.The Department will pay the quantity of linear pavement markings at the contract unit price per

linear foot. Price and payment constitute full compensation for:

1.Performing pavement marking layout work;
2.providing and placing all materials;
3.preparing pavement, including sandblasting, sweeping, and cleaning or removal of curing

compound on PCC pavement;

4.protecting uncured pavement markings from vehicle damage; and
5.repairing defective work as directed by the Department.
