556 SECTION 863 – PREFORMED THERMOPLASTIC PAVEMENT MARKINGS
863.1Description.
This work consists of providing and installing preformed thermoplastic pavement markings.
863.2Materials.
A.Preformed Thermoplastic Pavement Marking Section 1071.4
863.3Construction.
863.3.1 Submittals.
A.Submit a schedule of operations for the engineer’s approval before starting any pavement
marking work. Submit the schedule 2 -weeks before the striping application. 863.3.2 Pavement marking layout.
A.Perform pavement marking layout as needed to ensure accurate placement.
863.3.3 Application.
A.Clean pavement surface of oil, surface treatment, curing compound, dirt, grease, concrete
laitance, and other contaminants to a width at least 4 -inches wider than the marking to be applied.
B.Ensure ambient and surface temperatures are at least 40 degrees F and rising, and in accordance
with the manufacturer's recommendations. If the manufacturer recommended temperature requirement for the pavement marking material application deviates from these specifications, the manufacturer's recommendations shall hol d priority. Confirm the atmospheric and pavement surface conditions with the engineer prior to starting work.
C.Apply pavement marking material in accordance with the contract and the manufacturer’s
recommendations. Apply in accordance with the following provisions unless approved otherwise by the engineer.
1.Protect nearby joint filler, sealant material, and pavement marking material as directed by the
engineer before preheating the surface.
2.Uniformly apply surface glass beads as recommended by the manufacturer immediately after
application of the markings.
3.All necessary markings shall be installed before the end of the workday. Install the markings as
soon as possible after weather interrupts the work.
D.Protect the pavement markings for an adequate time to allow the markings to dry and become
track -free using a method approved by the engineer. Follow the manufacturer’s recommendations for track -free time.
E.Remove existing pavement markings that conflict with new or altered traffic patterns as well as
any layout markings installed that detract from the overall appearance or function of pavement markings in accordance with Section 868. PREFORMED THERMOPLASTIC PAVEMENT MARKINGS SECTION 863
557 F. Request engineer to perform retroreflectivity testing once pavement marking at the location is complete. 863.3.4 Evaluation and Correction.
A.The engineer will evaluate the pavement markings for defects after an observation period of 180 -
days from the date the pavement is opened to traffic. Time charges will not be assessed during the observation period provided all other work is complete. The engineer may waive a portion or all of the 180 -day observation period.
B.The engineer will inform the contractor of pavement markings that have failed and that require
corrective action.
C.Correct pavement marking defects as directed by the engineer within 30 -days of receiving written
notification. Examples of pavement marking defects for preformed thermoplastic pavement marking material include:
1.Insufficient retroreflectivty, glass bead coverage or bead retention.
2.Damage caused by a vehicle tracking over uncured pavement marking material.
3.Discolored marking when compared visually with color chips.
4.Insufficient pavement marking thickness.
5.Less than 90 percent of material remaining for each individual symbol, transverse pavement
marking, or legends.
6.Pavement marking cracking, bleeding, or staining.
863.4Method of Measurement.
A.The Department will measure symbols and transverse pavement markings as the number of
square feet placed and accepted. Symbols and transverse pavement markings will be measured in accordance with the following square foot values:
1.Straight arrow symbol 12.50 ft²
2.Left and right arrow symbol 15.50 ft²
3.Combination arrow symbol 20.00 ft²
4."ONLY" legend 23.00 ft²
5."SCHOOL" legend 35.00 ft²
6."STOP" legend 23.50 ft²
7.“AHEAD” legend 40.00 ft²
8.Transverse line, 8 -inch 0.66 ft² / linear foot
9.Transverse line, 12 -inch 1.00 ft² / linear foot
10.Transverse line, 16 -inch 1.33 ft² / linear foot
11.Transverse line, 24 -inch 2.00 ft² / linear foot

B.The Department will measure bike, shared lane, pedestrian, and accessible parking space marking
as the number of square feet placed and accepted. Symbol and legend dimensions per the DE MUTCD as described:
1.Bike symbol helmeted bicyclist symbol with a 2' x 6' arrow symbol.
2.Pedestrian symbol walking pedestrian 4' x 8' with a 2’ x 6’ arrow symbol.
3.Accessible parking space marking 40" x 40".
4.Shared lane marking helmeted bicyclist symbol with 5" W chevrons.
863.5Basis of Payment.
A.The Department will pay the quantity of symbols and transverse pavement markings at the
contract unit price per square foot. Price and payment constitute full compensation for:
1.Performing pavement marking layout work;
2.providing and placing all materials;
3.preparing pavement, including sandblasting, sweeping, and cleaning or removal of curing
compound on PCC pavement;
4.protecting uncured pavement markings from vehicle damage; and
5.repairing defective work as directed by the Department.
B.The Department will pay the quantity of bike, pedestrian, and accessible parking space symbols at
the contract unit price per each. Price and payment constitute full compensation for:
1.Performing pavement marking layout work;
2.providing and placing all materials;
3.preparing pavement, including sandblasting, sweeping, and cleaning or removal of curing
compound on PCC pavement;
4.protecting uncured pavement markings from vehicle damage; and
5.repairing defective work as directed by the Department.

559 SECTION 864 – PREFORMED PAVEMENT MARKING TAPE
864.1Description.
This work consists of providing and installing preformed pavement marking tape.
864.2Materials.
A.Preformed Pavement Marking Tape Section 1071.5
864.3Construction.
864.3.1 Submittals.
A.Submit the following items to the engineer:
1.Submit documentation from the pavement marking tape manufacturer certifying that the
contractor is trained to install the pavement marking tape before tape placement starts.
2.Submit documentation for personnel verifying a minimum 5 -years of experience in using and
placing the material before tape placement starts.
3.Submit a schedule of operations for the engineer’s approval before starting any pavement
marking work. Submit the schedule 2 -weeks before the striping application. 864.3.2 Pavement marking layout.
A.Perform pavement marking layout as needed to ensure accurate placement. Ensure the marking
method used is compatible with the pavement marking tape.
B.Offset longitudinal lines at least 2 -inches from longitudinal pavement joints or seams.
C.Offset longitudinal lines at least 2 -inches to the inside of shoulder breaks of pavement.
864.3.3 Application.
A.General application requirements.
1.Evaluate the existing pavement surface for placement suitability before performing the work.
Notify the engineer of existing permanent markings and of deteriorated pavement surfaces. Perform remedial actions as directed by the engineer.
2.Ensure ambient and surface temperatures are at least 40 F and rising, and in accordance with
the manufacturer's recommendations. If the manufacturer recommended temperature requirement for the pavement marking material application deviates from these speci fications, the manufacturer's recommendations shall hold priority. Confirm the atmospheric and pavement surface conditions with the engineer prior to starting work.
3.Unless directed otherwise by the engineer, provide a manufacturer’s representative, or qualified
personnel, onsite to oversee all operations and to ensure successful installation of markings, to provide training and product information, and to problem solv e as directed by the engineer.
4.Place a butt splice at the end of pavement marking tape rolls. Do not overlap tape.
