567 SECTION 866 – BLACKOUT PAVEMENT MARKING TAPE
866.1Description.
This work consists of providing, installing, and removing blackout pavement marking tape.
866.2Materials.
A.Blackout Pavement Marking Tape Section 1071.7
866.3Construction.
A.Submit a schedule of operations for the engineer’s approval before starting any pavement
marking work. Submit the schedule 2 -weeks before the striping application.
B.Perform pavement marking layout as needed to ensure accurate placement.
C.Clean pavement surface of oil, surface treatment, curing compound, dirt, grease, concrete
laitance, and other contaminants to a width at least 4 -inches wider than the marking to be applied.
D.Ensure ambient and surface temperatures and the relative humidity conforms to the
manufacturer’s recommendations. Confirm the atmospheric and pavement surface conditions with the engineer prior to starting work.
E.Apply blackout pavement marking tape in accordance with the contract and the manufacturer’s
recommendations. Do not apply blackout tape on Portland cement concrete pavement. Apply in accordance with the following provisions unless approved otherwise by the engineer.
1.Apply pavement markings in the general direction of traffic.
2.Apply at an application speed of no more than 10 m iles per hour .
3.All necessary markings shall be installed before the end of the workday. Install the markings as
soon as possible after weather interrupts the work.
F.Remove existing pavement markings that conflict with new or altered traffic patterns as well as
any layout markings installed that detract from the overall appearance or function of pavement markings in accordance with Section 868.
G.The engineer will evaluate the pavement markings for defects after application. Correct pavement
marking defects as directed by the engineer.
866.4Method of Measurement.
A.The Department will measure blackout pavement markings as the number of linear feet of
pavement markings placed and accepted.
866.5Basis of Payment.
A.The Department will pay the quantity of linear pavement markings at the contract unit price per
linear foot. Price and payment constitute full compensation for:
1.Performing pavement marking layout work;

568 2. providing and placing all materials;
3.preparing pavement, including sandblasting, sweeping, and cleaning or removal of curing
compound on PCC pavement;
4.protecting uncured pavement markings from vehicle damage; and
5.repairing defective work as directed by the Department.

569 SECTION 867 – SNOWPLOWABLE RAISED PAVEMENT MARKERS
867.1Description.
This work consists of providing, installing, replacing, and removing snowplowable raised pavement markers.
867.2Materials.
A.Raised or Recessed Pavement Marker Section 1071.8.1
B.Epoxy Resin Adhesive Section 1071.8.2
867.3Construction.
867.3.1 Installation of new pavement markers:
A.Before installing, layout the pavement marker locations.
B.Saw cut the pavement to match the bottom contour of the marker housing:
1.Use only truck mounted saw cutting equipment.
2.Cut a slot deep enough to set the housing in epoxy with leveling lugs resting on the pavement
surface so that the front edge of the marker is at or below the pavement surface.
3.Repair excessive saw cuts to the satisfaction of the engineer.
C.Ensure air temperature and surface temperature at the time of application are in accordance with
the epoxy resin adhesive manufacturer’s recommendations.
D.Perform slot cleaning to remove loose material as recommended by the epoxy resin adhesive
manufacturer.
E.Install the epoxy and pavement marker in the prepared contour slot in accordance with the
manufacturer’s recommendations. When the housing is installed, the epoxy should completely fill voids between the housing and the road surface. 867.3.2 Installation of replacement lens:
A.Remove the existing pavement marker lens from the housing.
B.Clean the housing as recommended by the manufacturer.
C.Install replacement lens according to the manufacturer’s recommendations.
867.3.3 Pavement marker removal:
A.Remove the pavement marker in a method that will cause the least damage to the pavement
structure and is approved by the engineer.
B.Repair any pavement damage caused by removal to the satisfaction of the engineer.
867.4Method of Measurement.
