ALKYD TYPE THERMOPLASTIC PAVEMENT MARKINGS SECTION 862

551 SECTION 862 – ALKYD TYPE THERMOPLASTIC PAVEMENT MARKINGS

862.1Description.

This work consists of providing and installing alkyd type thermoplastic pavement markings.

862.2Materials.

A.Alkyd type thermoplastic striping Section 1071.3.1
B.Glass beads Section 1071.3.2

862.3Construction.

862.3.1 Submittals.

A.Submit a schedule of operations for the engineer’s approval before starting any pavement

marking work. Submit the schedule 2 -weeks before the striping application. 862.3.2 Equipment.

A.Provide the engineer access to the application equipment for inspection. Do not commence work

until equipment is approved by the engineer.

B.Keep certificate of analysis for pavement marking material being applied by the equipment within

a vehicle cabin. Provide the certificate of analysis to the engineer upon request.

C.Use either small equipment or vehicle mounted equipment conforming to the following

requirements:

1.Capable of applying approved alkyd thermoplastic pavement marking material in a manner that

conforms with the manufacturer’s requirements and the requirements of the contract.

2.Equipped with oil or air jacketed kettles for uniform melting and heating of the thermoplastic

material, with an automatic thermostatic device to provide positive temperature. The kettles are to conform to the requirements of the National Board of Fire Un derwriters (NBFU), the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), and State and local authorities. Kettles are to be easily accessible for performance of cleaning and maintenance.

3.Capable of continuous mixing and agitation of the material in the kettle. Constructed so that all

mixing and conveying parts, including the application apparatus, maintains the material at the specified temperature and constructed to prevent clogging of th e applicator conveying parts between the reservoir and the application apparatus.

4.Equipped with temperature gauges that have been calibrated within the past six months.

Provide proof of calibration to the engineer upon request.

5.Equipped with a bead dispenser capable of mechanically conveying glass beads onto the painted

surface, at the required application rate, by pressurization or other method not dependent upon gravity.

D.Vehicle mounted equipment is to meet the following additional equipment requirements:
1.Capable of holding a minimum of 600 -pounds of molten thermoplastic material for long line

552 2. Capable of applying centerline and edgeline markings at the width indicated in solid or broken patterns or various combinations thereof.

3.Mobile and maneuverable enough to produce straight lines and standard curves in true arcs.
4.Equipped with DE MUTCD compliant signage when mobile applications are performed.
E.Clean all parts of the equipment of foreign or different colored material prior to introducing a new

material batch. 862.3.3 Pavement marking layout.

A.Perform pavement marking layout as needed to ensure accurate placement.
B.Offset longitudinal lines at least 2 -inches from longitudinal pavement joints or seams.
C.Offset longitudinal lines at least 2 -inches to the inside of shoulder breaks of pavement.

862.3.4 Application.

A.Clean pavement surface of oil, surface treatment, curing compound, dirt, grease, concrete

laitance, and other contaminants to a width at least 4 -inches wider than the marking to be applied.

B.Ensure ambient and surface temperatures are at least 50 degrees F and rising, and in accordance

with the manufacturer's recommendations. If the manufacturer recommended temperature requirement for the pavement marking material application deviates from these specifications, the manufacturer's recommendations shall hol d priority. Confirm the atmospheric and pavement surface conditions with the engineer prior to starting work.

C.Evaluate the bond of the existing thermoplastic material to the existing pavement surface when

applying new material over existing thermoplastic material. Remove existing thermoplastic material that is not properly bonded to the existing pavement surface a t the direction of the engineer.

D.Place a quality control strip as directed by the engineer at the beginning of each day’s operations

to demonstrate that the application equipment is working properly and applying markings as required. Repeat the demonstration whenever there is a change in equipment settings or as directed by the engineer when the quality of the line being applied is in question. Authorization to proceed will be given by the engineer when the quality control test indicates conformance. If the application of the control st rip is on the actual roadway, correct any application that is not in compliance with the contract.

E.Apply pavement marking material in accordance with the contract and the manufacturer’s

recommendations. Apply in accordance with the following provisions unless approved otherwise by the engineer.

1.Apply pavement markings in the general direction of traffic.
2.Apply at an application speed of no more than 10 miles per hour .
3.Dispense thermoplastic marking material to a thickness of 90 -mils for longitudinal lines and 125 -

mils for transverse lines, symbols, and legends. Uniformly apply glass beads across the surface at a rate of 10 -pounds per 100 square feet of marking. ALKYD TYPE THERMOPLASTIC PAVEMENT MARKINGS SECTION 862

553 4. All necessary markings shall be installed before the end of the workday. Install the markings as soon as possible after weather interrupts the work.

F.Protect the pavement markings for an adequate time to allow the markings to dry and become

track -free using a method approved by the engineer. Follow the manufacturer’s recommendations for track -free time.

G.Remove existing pavement markings that conflict with new or altered traffic patterns as well as

any layout markings installed that detract from the overall appearance or function of pavement markings in accordance with Section 868.

H.Request engineer to perform retroreflectivity testing once pavement marking at the location is

complete. 862.3.5 Evaluation and Correction.

A.The engineer will evaluate the pavement markings for defects after an observation period of 180 -

days from the date the pavement is opened to traffic. Time charges will not be assessed during the observation period provided all other work is complete. The engineer may waive a portion or all of the 180 -day observation period.

B.The engineer will inform the contractor of pavement markings that have failed and that require

corrective action.

C.Correct pavement marking defects as directed by the engineer within 30 -days of receiving written

notification. Examples of pavement marking defects for alkyd type thermoplastic pavement marking material include:

1.Insufficient retroreflectivty, glass bead coverage or bead retention.
2.Damage caused by a vehicle tracking over uncured pavement marking material.
3.More than 5 percent exposure of substrate or poor adhesion in any 2000 -feet section of

longitudinal marking.

4.Discolored marking when compared visually with color chips.
5.Longitudinal marking is more than 2 -inches out of place.
6.Insufficient pavement marking thickness.
7.Pavement marking variations more than 3/8 -inch from alignment within any 40 -foot section of

traveled way.

8.Less than 90 percent of material remaining for each individual symbol, transverse pavement

marking, or legends.

9.Pavement marking cracking, bleeding, or staining.

862.4Method of Measurement.

A.The Department will measure linear pavement markings as the number of linear feet of pavement

markings placed and accepted.

B.The Department will measure symbols and transverse pavement markings as the number of

square feet placed and accepted. Symbols and transverse pavement markings will be measured in accordance with the following square foot values: ALKYD TYPE THERMOPLASTIC PAVEMENT MARKINGS SECTION 862

862.5Basis of Payment.

A.The Department will pay the quantity of linear pavement markings at the contract unit price per

linear foot. Price and payment constitute full compensation for:

1.Performing pavement marking layout work;
2.providing and placing all materials;
3.preparing pavement, including sandblasting, sweeping, and cleaning or removal of curing

compound on PCC pavement;

4.protecting uncured pavement markings from vehicle damage; and
5.repairing defective work as directed by the Department.
B.The Department will pay the quantity of symbols and transverse pavement markings at the

contract unit price per square foot. Price and payment constitute full compensation for:

1.Performing pavement marking layout work;
2.providing and placing all materials;
3.preparing pavement, including sandblasting, sweeping, and cleaning or removal of curing

compound on PCC pavement;

4.protecting uncured pavement markings from vehicle damage; and
5.repairing defective work as directed by the Department.

556 SECTION 863 – PREFORMED THERMOPLASTIC PAVEMENT MARKINGS

863.1Description.

This work consists of providing and installing preformed thermoplastic pavement markings.

863.2Materials.

A.Preformed Thermoplastic Pavement Marking Section 1071.4

863.3Construction.

863.3.1 Submittals.

A.Submit a schedule of operations for the engineer’s approval before starting any pavement

marking work. Submit the schedule 2 -weeks before the striping application. 863.3.2 Pavement marking layout.

A.Perform pavement marking layout as needed to ensure accurate placement.

863.3.3 Application.

A.Clean pavement surface of oil, surface treatment, curing compound, dirt, grease, concrete

laitance, and other contaminants to a width at least 4 -inches wider than the marking to be applied.

B.Ensure ambient and surface temperatures are at least 40 degrees F and rising, and in accordance

with the manufacturer's recommendations. If the manufacturer recommended temperature requirement for the pavement marking material application deviates from these specifications, the manufacturer's recommendations shall hol d priority. Confirm the atmospheric and pavement surface conditions with the engineer prior to starting work.

C.Apply pavement marking material in accordance with the contract and the manufacturer’s

recommendations. Apply in accordance with the following provisions unless approved otherwise by the engineer.

1.Protect nearby joint filler, sealant material, and pavement marking material as directed by the

engineer before preheating the surface.

2.Uniformly apply surface glass beads as recommended by the manufacturer immediately after

application of the markings.

3.All necessary markings shall be installed before the end of the workday. Install the markings as

soon as possible after weather interrupts the work.

D.Protect the pavement markings for an adequate time to allow the markings to dry and become

track -free using a method approved by the engineer. Follow the manufacturer’s recommendations for track -free time.

E.Remove existing pavement markings that conflict with new or altered traffic patterns as well as

any layout markings installed that detract from the overall appearance or function of pavement markings in accordance with Section 868.
