569 SECTION 867 – SNOWPLOWABLE RAISED PAVEMENT MARKERS
867.1Description.
This work consists of providing, installing, replacing, and removing snowplowable raised pavement markers.
867.2Materials.
A.Raised or Recessed Pavement Marker Section 1071.8.1
B.Epoxy Resin Adhesive Section 1071.8.2
867.3Construction.
867.3.1 Installation of new pavement markers:
A.Before installing, layout the pavement marker locations.
B.Saw cut the pavement to match the bottom contour of the marker housing:
1.Use only truck mounted saw cutting equipment.
2.Cut a slot deep enough to set the housing in epoxy with leveling lugs resting on the pavement
surface so that the front edge of the marker is at or below the pavement surface.
3.Repair excessive saw cuts to the satisfaction of the engineer.
C.Ensure air temperature and surface temperature at the time of application are in accordance with
the epoxy resin adhesive manufacturer’s recommendations.
D.Perform slot cleaning to remove loose material as recommended by the epoxy resin adhesive
manufacturer.
E.Install the epoxy and pavement marker in the prepared contour slot in accordance with the
manufacturer’s recommendations. When the housing is installed, the epoxy should completely fill voids between the housing and the road surface. 867.3.2 Installation of replacement lens:
A.Remove the existing pavement marker lens from the housing.
B.Clean the housing as recommended by the manufacturer.
C.Install replacement lens according to the manufacturer’s recommendations.
867.3.3 Pavement marker removal:
A.Remove the pavement marker in a method that will cause the least damage to the pavement
structure and is approved by the engineer.
B.Repair any pavement damage caused by removal to the satisfaction of the engineer.
867.4Method of Measurement.

570 A. The Department will measure pavement markers as the number of each pavement marker installed, replaced, or removed and accepted.
867.5Basis of Payment.
A.The Department will pay for the quantity of pavement markers installed at the contract unit price
per each. Price and payment constitute full compensation for:
1.Performing pavement marker layout work;
2.providing all materials;
3.saw-cutting;
4.cleaning;
5.installing;
6.discarding existing material; and
7.repairing excessive saw cuts.
B.The Department will pay for the quantity of pavement marker lenses replaced at the contract unit
price per each. Price and payment constitute full compensation for:
1.Removing existing pavement marker lens from the housing;
2.providing all materials;
3.cleaning;
4.installing; and
5.discarding existing material.
C.The Department will pay for the quantity of pavement marker removal at the contract unit price
per each. Price and payment constitute full compensation for:
1.Removing pavement markers;
2.discarding existing material; and
3.restoring existing pavement.

571 SECTION 868 – PAVEMENT MARKING REMOVAL
868.1Description.
This work consists of removing pavement marking material from a roadway surface.
868.2Materials.
NONE
868.3Construction.
A.Take care to remove pavement marking material in a manner that does not damage the existing
pavement surface.
1.Use shot or abrasive grit blasting or water blasting equipment to remove latex marking paint
and epoxy resins.
2.Use burning or grinding erasing machines, instead of shot or abrasive grit blasting or water
blasting, for removing alkyd thermoplastic markings, temporary marking tape, or preformed marking tape.
B.Collect and dispose of all shot and abrasive grit and pavement marking materials removed from
the pavement surface. Do not wash or sweep such material to the roadside.
C.Repair any pavement or surface damage caused during the removal process to the satisfaction of
the engineer.
D.Use an approved flat black paint or asphalt sealer to cover exposed aggregate or embedded paint
that remain after removing striping on bituminous concrete.
1.If grit blasting or water blasting is used to remove the pavement marking, use a flat black paint
to cover any exposed aggregate or embedded paint.
2.If a grinding erasing machine was used to remove the pavement marking, use an asphalt sealer
to cover exposed aggregate or embedded paint.
868.4Method of Measurement.
A.The Department will measure pavement marking removal as the number of square feet removed
and accepted.
868.5Basis of Payment.
A.The Department will pay the quantity of pavement marking removal at the contract unit price per
square foot. Price and payment constitute full compensation for:
1.Performing pavement marking removal;
2.performing collection and disposal of removed materials;
3.repairing damaged pavement surfaces caused by removal; and
4.covering exposed aggregate or remaining paint with flat blank paint or asphalt sealer.
